Got to the brewery at 9.30. Found there had been a fuss about the allowance Mr Briggs found a man drunk on Monday night & took the opportunity to cut down the allowance by 1 pint to each man. This morning the men from the brewhouse clamimed their pint before breakfast John Waples the forman refused to serve it & Mr Sprake supported him.
Abbot objected strongly & said he must throw up his job. On making enquiries we found that the brewery men had been having 5 pints every day & an extra pint for throwing out grains they ought only to have had 4, and as they are to be seduced by 1 pint they now only ought to have 3. They objected to loosing 2 pints a day. Mr Sprake & I decided that they are to have 3 pints like everyone else on non-brewing days & an extra pint on brewing days; also the man who throws out the grains is to have an extra pint.
I wrote to Brous letting him of my decision not to go with him to Switzerland as he had proposed on account of the cost (£10) but suggested that he should go to Belguim with us.
I went round to Mr Morris' in the evening to return a book he had lent me & there met Mr & Mrs Paget.
Stopped till 8:30 took two hands at bridge.
