Got to the dance at 8.0 just before the start I did not get away until 3.45.
We all had a glorious time. The thing went well from the start. 24 dances & 2 leap year extras. Principal partner was Miss Edwards, I looked first found her out once more & she asked me for the 2nd Leap year. This turned out to be unfortunate because when the dance came Miss Briggs herself whose coming out it was came up to me I had to refuse- very annoying. She looked splendid I had two dances with her & she sat opposite at supper where she was quite jolly not so quiet & retiring as she was at the dance at which I met her for the first time. I had two with her sister Dorothy & we got on quite well.
My supper partner was a Miss Fish who had lived in Lisbon all her life. She was there during the revolution a very interesting My partner in the first leap year was Miss Frost a farmers daughter a jolly girl we had arranged it before. Miss Barnes who came from N Kensington & was staying with the Briggs had two dances, small but very attractive very like May Buttnshaw who came home from China with us. Miss Corly was looking very pretty & very saucy Miss Briggs however held her own easily. I got Very tired before the close and very glad to get to bed. Got up about 9. this morning did not feal stiff found the cold had been banished by the terrible amount of sweating I had done - It was hot .
But I did not feel by any means quite fit. Spent quiet day in the brewery. In the evening found the Cooper Thornhill asleep in front of the fire in his shop. He said he felt very bad & was suffering from cold this though I did not believe it at the time proved to be true as he stayed away the next day. I am sorry I misjudged him. Mrs Balaam also suffereing from cold but cheerful the same.
About 8.30 Rowbotham called to take me round to the church Institute. We played bridge with two excellent players & I got hopelessly lost I made an awful show. I decided to join. They have three rooms. Card room, Reading Room, Billiard Room with a full sized table.
